The RRP is a mandatory intervention program for individuals convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Boating Under the Influence (BUI), possession of illegal drugs, or underage possession of alcohol or drugs while operating a motor vehicle.

The program is not a traditional “school” but is an intervention program designed to help you assess your personal usage of alcohol or drugs and its impact on your driving.

The program consists of two mandatory components that must be completed in order:

• Part 1: The Assessment Component ($100)
  This is a 130-question screening instrument, often called the “NEEDS” assessment. It is not a pass/fail test. It is a personal survey to help you and the program instructor evaluate your relationship with alcohol or drugs. This must be completed before you can attend the 20-hour course.
• Part 2: The Intervention Component ($235 + $25 Workbook)
  This is a 20-hour classroom course, often called the “Prime for Life” curriculum. This course is delivered over several days and provides therapeutic education and peer group counseling.

You will not receive a Certificate of Completion until you have successfully finished both components.

The cost is set by Georgia law. The total cost for the entire program is $360.00.

This fee is broken down as follows:

• Assessment Component: $100.00
• Intervention Component (Course): $235.00
• Workbook: $25.00

Certified schools are not permitted to charge more or less than this state-mandated fee.

No. The State of Georgia and the Department of Driver Services (DDS) do not accept certificates from self-paced online DUI/Risk Reduction programs for license reinstatement or court purposes.

However, some state-certified schools may offer “live, virtual” classes (e.g., via Zoom) where you must be present and on camera with a live instructor for the entire 20-hour intervention. These live, virtual courses are acceptable, but a course you complete on your own time is not. You must verify that the provider is certified by the Georgia DDS.

You must attend a program that is certified by the Georgia DDS. A complete, official list of certified schools is maintained on the DDS website. We strongly advise you to select a school from this list to ensure your certificate is valid.

• No, they are two different requirements.
  • The RRP Assessment (the 130-question survey) is a mandatory part of the DUI/Risk Reduction Program and is included in your $360 fee.
  • A Clinical Evaluation is a separate, in-depth evaluation performed by a medical or mental health professional (a DBHDD-approved evaluator) to determine if you have a substance use disorder and require treatment.

  A judge may order you to complete both. Completing the RRP does not satisfy the requirement for a separate Clinical Evaluation if one has been ordered.

Attendance policies are extremely strict and are set by the state. You must complete the entire 20-hour intervention component.

If you are late for any session, the school has the right to deny you entry. You will not be allowed to make up the time. You will be required to re-register and pay the full course fee again to start a new program from the beginning. We advise you to treat this schedule with the utmost seriousness.

The 20-hour intervention course cannot be completed in one day. Most schools structure the course over a weekend or several evenings. A common schedule is Friday evening, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday.

If you were convicted in Georgia but live in another state, you must complete a substantially similar DUI intervention program in your home state.

Before you enroll in any out-of-state program, you must:

1. Ensure the program is certified in that state.
2. Ensure the course is at least 20 hours long.
3. Contact the Georgia DDS to verify that the out-of-state program will be accepted.

Upon successful completion of both the Assessment and the 20-hour Intervention, the certified school will issue you an official Certificate of Completion.

This certificate is the legal proof you need for the court or to have your driver’s license reinstated by the DDS. It is your responsibility to keep this certificate safe and submit it to the proper authorities.

This is the most common question, as drivers take the course for several different reasons. The top five are:

• Point Reduction: To remove up to 7 points from your Georgia driver’s license. This can only be done once every 5 years.
• Insurance Discount: To get an auto insurance discount. By law, drivers 25 or older with a clean 3-year driving record are guaranteed a discount of at least 10%.
• License Reinstatement: To regain driving privileges after a suspension. This is common for:
  • Drivers who accumulate 15 or more points in 24 months.
  • Drivers under 21 who are suspended for a single 4-point violation (e.g., speeding 24+ mph over the limit).
  • Drivers under 18 who accumulate 4 or more points in a 12-month period.
• Ticket Dismissal / Fine Reduction: In some counties, a judge may allow you to take the course to have a ticket dismissed (so it doesn’t appear on your record) or to get a 20% reduction in your fine.

This is the most confusing question for most drivers. Here is the critical distinction:

• Yes (for “virtual classroom”): You can take a DDS-approved “virtual” or “remote” course. These are live, 6-hour classes taught by a certified instructor on a platform like Zoom. You must be present and on-camera for the entire scheduled time, just as you would in a physical classroom.
• No (for self-paced): The Georgia DDS does not accept 100% online, self-paced courses (where you click through slides on your own time) for official purposes like point reduction, court orders, or license reinstatement.

Self-paced online courses are generally only acceptable for an insurance discount, and you must confirm with your insurance provider first.

The price for the 6-hour defensive driving course in Georgia is $95.00 and is set by Georgia state law.

Successful completion of the course allows you to remove up to 7 points from your driving record. This option is only available once every 5 years.

• Defensive Driving (6-Hour): This is a driver improvement course for people who already have their license.
• Driver’s Ed (30+6 Hour): This is a driver education course for new teen drivers to get their Class D license. It involves 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training (the “Joshua’s Law” requirement).

The defensive driving curriculum focuses on changing driving attitudes and behaviors. Common topics include:

• Georgia traffic laws and new legislation
• Defensive driving techniques and crash avoidance strategies (e.g., the 2-second rule, scanning)
• The dangers of impaired driving (alcohol and drugs)
• Managing distractions, fatigue, and road rage
• The proper use of safety equipment, like seatbelts and airbags

Yes. At the end of the 6-hour course, you will be required to pass a final exam or quiz. The test covers the material presented in the class.

Georgia DUI School will issue your official Certificate of Completion immediately at the end of the class. Students in virtual classrooms will typically receive their official certificate within 24 hours of completion.
